Fledgling season and wildlife

Fitzroy Veterinary Clinic works in conjunction with Wildlife Victoria in assessing wildlife for rehabilitation. Recently we had a fledgling tawny Frog Mouth owl brought into the clinic by a local primary school. They had noticed the fledgling on the ground and it was being swooped by adult magpies. There was a nest nearby but only one adult was seen. The young owl was assessed by our veterinarian and fortunately no injuries were found. A wildlife carer was called to take it away for rehabilitation. Once healthy and fit, the owl would be released.

Lost ringtail possum rehabilitated

Fitzroy Veterinary Surgery works very closely with Wildlife Victoria whose aim is to rescue and rehabilitate native wildlife and provide care for sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife. Recently, an orphaned male ringtail possum was brought into our clinic. We regularly take in orphaned or injured wildlife from the public. Our role is to assess the health of these animals and then either realistically advise treatment options based on the chance of rehabilitation, or in severe cases, humanely euthanase. Unfortunately, due to legislation we are not able to release non-native species back into the environment.

Leopold the rabbit feeling a little heat stress

Leopold the bunny came into the clinic breathing uneasily, flaring his nostrils and looking lethargic (sleepy). It was one of Melbourne's hottest days in November and Leopold was suffering from heat stress. Leopold was admitted to hospital for close monitoring and was actively cooled to reduce his temperature.

Crash the brushtail possum

Meet Crash. Crash is a baby brushtail possum weighing no more than 100g. He was brought into the Fitzroy Veterinary Clinic earlier this month after his mum had been hit by a car. Unfortunately she died instantly, but tucked away safely in her pouch was little "Crash" (as he was named by his wildlife carer).

Wildlife Victoria and Veterinary Nurse to The Rescue!!

Recently Carly Wilby, Fitzroy Veterinary Nurse had the pleasure of assisting in a wallaby rescue. The rescue was done in conjunction with Sandy Fernee from Wildlife Victoria. We were called to help an adult Wallaby that had become wedged between a fence and a water tank in a front yard in Northcote.

Speedy the Bearded Dragon's close call

Last month Fiztroy Vet Clinic helped out Derinya Primary School when one of the classes Bearded Dragon's was injured. "Speedy" was bitten on the right arm by his big brother dragon. The injury was so severe that the arm needed to be amputated.

Sven the rabbit visits the vet

Recently “Sven” a came to visit us at the clinic as his owners noticed he was having trouble eating. Sven was having trouble eating because of his overgrown front teeth (incisors). This condition occurs in rabbits when the teeth/ jaw are not aligned as they should be (mal occluded). Therefore when they chew, the teeth do not contact each other and, as they are continuously growing, they need this friction to wear them down.

Peck the duck recovers from a nasty attack

“Peck” the duckling presented to our clinic in shock, following an attack by a dog. He suffered multiple wounds and lacerations all over his tiny body. “Peck” was admitted to our hospital for treatment and pain relief. The wounds were flushed and bathed.
