The importance of a 'seniors' check up!

Austin is a 12 year old domestic short hair who visit our clinic recently for his annual vaccination and check up. As Austin is of senior age his owners were concerned about his overall health. To give us a complete picture of what was going on with Austin we took a reading of his blood pressure, collected a urine sample and sent a blood test off to the laboratory for testing.
Austin's blood pressure was normal but his urine and blood test showed a slight increase in renal enzymes.
He was diagnosed with early stage renal disease and placed on a renal diet (renal diets have reduced sodium and phosphorus levels which reduces the work load on the kidneys).
Austin will need close monitoring over the next few months and he will remain indefinately on a renal diet to help slow down the disease.
